October 8, 2024 Project Update #8: Stony Creek Rd Bridge (Ypsilanti Twp)

The contractor placed reinforced steel and is waiting for the concrete to cure on the aprons of the new structure on the Stony Creek Rd Bridge over Paint Creek between Textile Rd and Whittaker Rd in Ypsilanti Township.  

 Next steps will be to place the wingwalls on top of the aprons and to backfill behind them. All work is weather permitting.

October 2, 2024 Project Update #7: Stony Creek Rd (Ypsilanti Twp)

The week of September 23rd, the precast concrete structure (box culvert) was delivered earlier than scheduled by the manufacturer. 

This week and next week, the contractor is assembling the new structure on the Stony Creek Rd over Paint Creek between Textile Rd and Whittaker Rd in Ypsilanti Township. Concrete will also be cast in-place for the bridge apron during the week of September 30th. All work is weather permitting.

September 18, 2024 Project Update #6: Stony Creek Rd Bridge Replacement Project

The week of September 16, the contractor for the Washtenaw County Road Commission (WCRC) has excavated and placed the bedding stone in preparation for the placement of the new structure on the Stony Creek Rd over Paint Creek between Textile Rd and Whittaker Rd in Ypsilanti Township. The new precast concrete structure is anticipated to be delivered the week of September 23rd. All work is weather permitting.

September 10, 2024 Project Update #5: Stony Creek Rd Bridge Replacement Project

Demolition of the old bridge is finished on the Stony Creek Rd bridge over Paint Creek between Textile Rd and Whittaker Rd in Ypsilanti Township. Below is a picture of where the bridge once stood. The contractor began the installation of the culvert base the week of September 9, 2024  

We learned the new structure is anticipated to arrive September 18, 2024.  All work and dates are weather permitting.

August 28, 2024 Project Update #4: Stony Creek Rd Bridge Replacement Project

The contractor has finished installing a creek bypass and begun the demolition on the Stony Creek Rd bridge over Paint Creek between Textile Rd and Whittaker Rd in Ypsilanti Township. Once the removal has been completed, installation of the culvert base material will follow in preparation of the placement of the new structure.

August 22, 2024 Traffic Signal Work: Huron Rd (Ypsilanti Twp)

WHEN: Monday, August 26, 2024

WHERE: Intersection of Huron Rd and Brinker Rd in Ypsilanti Township

WHY: Traffic signal work

BACKGROUND: On Monday, August 26, 2024, the Washtenaw County Road Commission (WCRC) will perform traffic signal work at the intersection of Huron Rd and Brinker Rd in Ypsilanti Township.

The road will not be closed to traffic, but delays are likely due to lane restrictions. WCRC encourages motorists, emergency services and others to use an alternate route.

The signal work is expected to take an estimated two weeks to complete. However, all dates are tentative and subject to change due to weather conditions.

August 22, 2024 Project Update #2: Bemis Rd Paving Project (Augusta & Ypsilanti Twps.)

The Washtenaw County Road Commission (WCRC) is delaying the paving project on Bemis Rd between Stony Creek Rd and Hitchingham Rd in Augusta and Ypsilanti Townships due to critical utility relocations essential for the continuation of the project. 

 The Bemis Rd paving project is scheduled to be completed in the 2025 construction season. WCRC is actively collaborating with utility providers to expedite the relocation process.

August 21, 2024 Project Update #3: Stony Creek Rd Bridge Replacement Project

Bridge work has begun on the Stony Creek Rd bridge over Paint Creek between Textile Rd and Whittaker Rd in Ypsilanti Township. On Friday, August 16th, the contractor closed Stony Creek Rd for the bridge replacement project.  

The next steps for the work will include removing the existing bridge in preparation for the replacement structure.

WHY: Preventative maintenance – fog seal

BACKGROUND: On Friday, July 19, 2024, the Washtenaw County Road Commission (WCRC) will continue a preventative maintenance fog seal project on Tuttle Hill Rd between Textile Rd and Huron River Dr in Ypsilanti Township.

Motorists can expect a combination of daytime road closures to allow the fog seal to cure. WCRC encourages motorists, emergency services and others to use an alternate route. A contractor for WCRC will return to this area in a few weeks to place permanent pavement markings.

The roadwork is expected to take approximately one day to complete. However, all dates are tentative and subject to change due to weather conditions.

BACKGROUND: On Tuesday, June 18, 2024, the Washtenaw County Road Commission (WCRC) will begin ditching, forestry, brush clearing and berm work in Pittsfield, York and Ypsilanti Township. WCRC crews will be performing this work on:

  • Bemis Rd between Carpenter Rd and Munger Rd
  • Merritt Rd between Carpenter Rd and Munger Rd
  • Munger Rd between Bemis Rd and Merritt Rd

The road will not be closed to traffic, but delays are likely due to the intermittent lane closures. WCRC encourages motorists, emergency services and others to use an alternate route.

The ditching, forestry, brush clearing, and berm work are expected to take approximately 30 days. However, all dates are tentative and subject to change due to weather conditions.

June 12, 2024 Project Update #2: Huron River Dr Resurfacing (Ypsilanti Twp)

Our asphalt resurfacing project on Huron River Dr between Huron Rd and Textile Rd in Ypsilanti Township is nearly complete!

Since the last update, the contractor completed milling the existing surface of the roadway. Paving operations were delayed by one day due to contractor scheduling. Paving operations began on Tuesday, June 11, and are expected to be completed tomorrow, Thursday, June 13. Once paving is finished, aggregate (stone) shoulders will be placed, and traffic restrictions will be lifted.

Washtenaw County, Wednesday, June 5, 2024 The Washtenaw County Road Commission (WCRC) and the Washtenaw County Parks and Recreation Commission (WCPARC) invites the public to a hybrid informational session on Monday, June 24, 2024, at 11:30 a.m. to learn more about the renew and restore 0.5 mill four-year county-wide roads and non-motorized millage (Proposal A). WCRC encourages residents to join the conversation either in person or in a Zoom meeting.

Washtenaw County voters are being asked on the August 6, 2024, ballot to renew and restore the 0.5 mill four-year county-wide roads and non-motorized millage (Washtenaw County Proposal A). This is not a new tax for voters. If renewed and restored, the 0.5 mill is expected to generate approximately $10.9 million per year for roads and non-motorized pathway projects. WCRC would receive approximately $4.9 million per year for road work in 20 townships, Cities would receive approximately $3.8 million per year, with specific allocations based on the amount raised within cities borders, and WCPARC would receive approximately $2.2 million per year to support the expansion of the county non-motorized path network through the Border-to-Border Trail Project (B2B Trail) and the Connecting Communities Grant Program.  

“Since its inception a decade ago, the county-wide roads and non-motorized millage has consistently delivered on its promise to improve the roadways, bridges, and non-motorized pathways in Washtenaw County,” said Matthew MacDonell, Managing Director of Washtenaw County Road Commission. “Through strategic investments and careful planning, we have witnessed significant progress in addressing the condition of our critical infrastructure.” 

“The Roads and Non-motorized Millage is a testament to the power of collective action and community investment. As we look towards the future, we are confident that our continued partnership with WCRC, Township, and City leaders and residents will enable us to build upon past successes and pave the way for a brighter, more resilient tomorrow,” said Coy Vaughn, Director of Washtenaw County Parks & Recreation Commission. 

More than 70% of county voters approved of the four-year, 0.5 mill roads and non-motorized millages in 2016 and 2020. With widespread support from our residents, the proposed Roads and Non-motorized Millage has consistently demonstrated its effectiveness in addressing the needs of our community. 

The Roads and Non-motorized Millage have been a vital lifeline for our community, providing the necessary resources to improve our road infrastructure and non-motorized pathways, says Chuck Tellas, Supervisor for York Township. March 15, 2024 Project Announcement: 2024 Resurfacing Program (County-wide)

The Washtenaw County Road Commission (WCRC) is announcing plans to invest $6.7 million to improve approximately 20 lane miles of pavement throughout Washtenaw County during the 2024 construction season. Cadillac Asphalt was awarded the contract. The projects are funded through the 2021-2024 Four-year County-wide Roads and Non-Motorized Millage, federal funds and Michigan Transportation Funds (MTF).

“Most of these investments are made possible by Washtenaw County residents who travel on these roads every day. As stewards of these precious dollars, WCRC is committed to ensuring these resources are reinvested into communities, in which it came from,” said Mike Bernbeck, WCRC Project Manager.

Construction will begin mid-April and will end during the fall of 2024, weather pending. Listed below are the project locations with a link to their project web page, funding cost and traffic impacts:

Motorists will experience road closures with detours, lane restrictions, and flagging operations. WCRC will maintain access for residents who live or work within the project limits during construction.
