FULL-TIME POSITIONS

Heavy Truck Driver

Washtenaw County Road Commission is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Heavy Truck Driver.  This position performs a variety of roadway maintenance activities including, but not limited to pothole repairs, culvert repair and installation, tree trimming, brush control, hauling material to various operations and winter maintenance activities.  The starting salary for this position is $19.43.

The successful candidate will possess the following qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Valid Michigan Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with an “N” (Tank) endorsement
  • Ability to lift 100 lbs.
  • One (1) year of heavy equipment experience and/or heavy construction/physical labor experience.
  • Must be willing to respond to emergencies outside regular work hours and work overtime including holidays and weekends.

Mechanic

Washtenaw County Road Commission is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Mechanic.  This position performs a full range of maintenance, repair and service activities on road commission vehicles and equipment.  Rebuilds and replaces mechanical, electrical and hydraulic systems as needed; performs regular preventative maintenance activities to keep all vehicles and equipment in service.  The salary range for this position is $22.89 – $27.41.

The successful candidate will possess the following qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Valid Michigan Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with an “N” (tank) endorsement
  • Michigan Certifications in Diesel Engine Repair and Brakes & Braking Systems (Heavy Duty Truck).

The successful candidate must be willing to obtain the remainder of the Heavy Duty Certifications within six (6) months of employment:

Engineering Technician - Construction

Washtenaw County Road Commission is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Engineering Technician II or III. The successful candidate will oversee a variety of quality control inspection activities, participate in the review and preparation of plans and related documents, ensure compliance with Washtenaw County Road Commission and/or Michigan Department of Transportation procedures, specifications and documentation requirements as relates to transportation construction activities, including the construction of roadways and bridge structures, within Washtenaw County.  The salary range for this position is $21.42-$26.77 for the Technician II and $23.25-$29.05 for Technician III.

The successful candidate will possess the following qualifications:

  • Associate’s degree in Civil Engineering Technology, Construction Technology, Surveying Technology, or its equivalent.
  • Minimum of three years’ experience performing technical quality control inspection activities on local agency and Michigan Department of Transportation construction projects, review and preparation of plans related documents, and proficient use of Fieldbook software or approved equivalent.

STUDENT POSITIONS

Engineering Internship - Construction & Design

Washtenaw County Road Commission is seeking qualified students for an internship with the Construction & Design section of our Engineering department for the summer of 2019.  The intern will work under the direct supervision of a licensed professional engineer.  The intern can expect to gain experience working in a transportation construction environment and will be exposed to a variety of construction management and inspection duties.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the support of construction staff and construction projects.
  • Assist with project documentation and monitoring.
  • Monitor contractor duties and operations.
  • Work closely with management to ensure continuous communication, develop better work efficiency and oversee the construction process for many construction projects.
  • Organize construction site observations into daily reports.

Requirements:

  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Possess a valid Michigan Driver’s License.
  • Pursuing a degree in Engineering or Construction Management and be an active student returning or enrolling in the fall of 2019.

Required Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Ability to communicate effectively with employees, contractors and the general public.
  • Excellent attendance required, dependable transportation and good work ethic.
  • Physical ability to work in extreme weather conditions and cope with temperature and other environmental extremes in a moving highway work zone.
  • Solid understanding of computer software and hardware. Intermediate to advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office and computer-aided design (AutoCAD).
  • Familiarity with construction materials and procedures, construction documents a plus.

The work schedule will be Monday – Friday 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.  Overtime work and weekend work may be required.  The hourly wage is $14.00 per hour.

Engineering Internship - Permits

Washtenaw County Road Commission is seeking qualified students for an internship with the Permits section of our Engineering department for the summer of 2019.  The intern will work under the direct supervision of a licensed professional engineer.  The intern will be exposed to a variety of construction activities within the road right-of-way and will assist with the inspection of utility, driveway and other miscellaneous permits.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the acquisition of data and information regarding permits.
  • Create formal drawings of sight distance from information acquired.
  • Develop a route plan for daily travels to sites.
  • Interpret analytics to assist with the completion of projects.
  • Assist in the preparation of reports, documentation and recommendations concerning utility, driveway and miscellaneous permits.
  • Assist with the planning for gutter and shoulder implementation.

Requirements:

  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Possess a valid Michigan Driver’s License.
  • Pursuing a degree in Engineering or Construction Technology and be an active student returning or enrolling in the fall of 2019.

Traffic Count Crew

Washtenaw County Road Commission is seeking qualified students for our Traffic Count Crew for the summer of 2019.  Students will work under the direct supervision of a civil engineer collecting data for our traffic count program.  Students will install traffic data collection tubes in the roadway and gather data from the tube counters.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the preparation of traffic data collection tubes.
  • Assist with the installation of traffic data collection tubes.
  • Assist in the planning and preparation of routes for data acquisition.
  • Assist in the surveying of traffic data collection areas and compares locations based on traffic volume and road behavior.

Requirements:

  • Must be 18 years of age or older.

Student Laborer - Heavy Equipment

Washtenaw County Road Commission is seeking qualified students for the position of Student Laborer for the summer of 2019.  Students will work alongside our Heavy Equipment crew to perform flagging operations to direct traffic through construction zones using handheld signs in addition to barricades and cones to keep motorists, pedestrians and our crews safe.

Requirements:

  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Possess a valid Michigan Driver’s License.
  • Be an active student returning or enrolling in the fall of 2019.
  • Excellent attendance, dependable transportation and a good work ethic.
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time and remain attentive to traffic conditions and other factors affecting safety and production.
  • Physical ability to work in extreme weather conditions and cope with temperature and other environmental extremes in a moving highway work zone.

The work schedule will be Monday – Thursday 6:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.   The hourly wage is $12.00 an hour.

Student Laborer - Facilities

Washtenaw County Road Commission is seeking qualified students for the position of Student Laborer for the summer of 2019.  Students will work alongside our Facilities crew to perform janitorial, general building maintenance and grounds maintenance duties.

Requirements:

  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Possess a valid Michigan Driver’s License.
  • Be an active student returning or enrolling in the fall of 2019.
  • Excellent attendance, dependable transportation and good work ethic.
