The Washtenaw County Road Commission (WCRC) is excited to announce a major safety and traffic improvement project at the intersection of Martz Road and Whittaker Road in Ypsilanti Township. Thanks to a $1.2 million federal Carbon Reduction Program grant awarded in 2023, this busy intersection will be converted into a modern roundabout.
The federal aid funds were programmed in 2023, and construction is currently scheduled to begin in 2026.
“Roundabouts are a proven way to improve safety, reduce serious crashes, and keep traffic—including goods, people, and services—moving efficiently,” said Becky Houle, WCRC Project Manager. “This project not only reduces high angle collisions but also supports better air quality by cutting back on vehicle idling.”
WCRC regularly monitors intersections across the county to improve safety and reduce congestion. The Martz Rd at Whittaker Rd intersection was identified as a high-priority location due to significant delays during peak travel times and a history of angle crashes.
As part of the project, the intersection will be fully closed to all traffic during construction. A detour route will be posted, and WCRC will provide timely updates throughout the project.
WCRC will host a virtual public information meeting regarding this project in Fall 2025.
