March 15, 2024 Project Announcement: 2024 Resurfacing Program (County-wide)

The Washtenaw County Road Commission (WCRC) is announcing plans to invest $6.7 million to improve approximately 20 lane miles of pavement throughout Washtenaw County during the 2024 construction season. Cadillac Asphalt was awarded the contract. The projects are funded through the 2021-2024 Four-year County-wide Roads and Non-Motorized Millage, federal funds and Michigan Transportation Funds (MTF).

“Most of these investments are made possible by Washtenaw County residents who travel on these roads every day. As stewards of these precious dollars, WCRC is committed to ensuring these resources are reinvested into communities, in which it came from,” said Mike Bernbeck, WCRC Project Manager.

Construction will begin mid-April and will end during the fall of 2024, weather pending. Listed below are the project locations with a link to their project web page, funding cost and traffic impacts:

Motorists will experience road closures with detours, lane restrictions, and flagging operations. WCRC will maintain access for residents who live or work within the project limits during construction.

WCRC will host a virtual public information meeting regarding the County-wide Resurfacing projects in Spring 2024. WCRC will post project updates online at wcroads.org. Residents can subscribe to road work advisories and project updates here.

February 23, 2024 Project Update #1: Sharon Valley Rd Bridge Replacement (Sharon Twp)

In early February, a contractor for the Washtenaw County Road Commission (WCRC) closed Sharon Valley Rd, over River Raisin, between Sharon Hollow Rd and Meyers Rd in Sharon Township for permitted soil boring (soil samples) work. The permitted work is related to preparation for the bridge replacement planned for 2025.

Due to subsurface water issues that have been encountered during this permitted work, the closure will be extended until the WCRC contractor can finish collecting soil samples. We hope to re-open the road early next week. WCRC will continue to send out updates as the project progresses.

For specific questions regarding this project, please contact Nate Murphy, Senior Project Manager – Design & Construction, at (734) 327-6647, or via email at [email protected].

February 6, 2024 Project Announcement: Sharon Valley Rd Bridge Replacement (Sharon Twp)

The Washtenaw County Road Commission (WCRC) plans to replace the bridge on Sharon Valley Rd, over River Raisin, between Sharon Hollow Rd and Meyers Rd in Sharon Township.

The Sharon Valley Rd Bridge is currently in the design phase and scheduled for construction in 2025. The bridge was built in 1960 and has reached the end of its design life. The two-lane bridge has been weight-restricted for many years and needs to be replaced. WCRC received a local bridge program grant from the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) to replace the aging structure.

“This project is about keeping communities connected,” says Nate Murphy, WCRC Senior Project Manager – Design and Construction. “WCRC could not move forward without the essential funding structure vital in upgrading local infrastructure.”

Residents will notice staff collecting data that may cause traffic impacts. This project will require some tree removals. During construction, the bridge will be closed to all traffic with a posted detour. As part of the bridge replacement, WCRC plans to pave a portion of the leading up to the structure on each side. WCRC will begin hosting virtual public information meetings regarding this project in the fall of 2024.

WCRC will alert the public with construction updates on the WCRC website, Facebook, and Twitter pages. Sign up for WCRC project updates: wcroads.org/residents/subscribe-to-road-updates/
