Big improvements are on the horizon for drivers in Salem and Northfield Townships: the intersection of Dixboro Road and Pontiac Trail is getting a major upgrade. The Washtenaw County Road Commission (WCRC) is transforming this busy intersection into a modern roundabout—designed to enhance safety, ease traffic delays, and support environmental goals.
Thanks to a $1.2 million federal Carbon Reduction Program grant awarded in 2023, construction is slated to begin in 2026.
“The Washtenaw County Road Commission’s top priority is making sure everyone gets where they need to go safely—whether you’re driving your kids to school, commuting to work, or running errands,” said Jane Allen, WCRC Project Manager. “This roundabout will help reduce serious crashes and make the intersection safer and less stressful for everyone who travels through it as well as reducing carbon emissions by cutting down idling times at stop signs”
Roundabouts help:
- Improve traffic flow by reducing delays during peak travel times.
- Enhance safety by lowering vehicle speeds and eliminating high-speed crossing conflicts.
- Support sustainability goals by reducing vehicle idling and fuel consumption.
WCRC routinely monitors intersections throughout the county to identify opportunities for improvement. Dixboro Rd at Pontiac Trail stood out due to growing congestion during peak hours. WCRC decided to install a roundabout at Dixboro and Pontiac Trail over a traditional signalized intersection since their continuous-flow design decreases commute times and lowers long-term maintenance costs. There is also an added safety benefit since roundabouts have been shown to reduce injury crashes by up to 75% and nearly eliminate fatal crashes.
To complete the project safely and efficiently, the intersection will be fully closed to all traffic during construction. A clearly marked detour will be posted, and WCRC will share updates with the community throughout the process.
A virtual public information meeting will be held in Fall 2025, giving residents and travelers a chance to learn more and ask questions.
For more information, visit the project web page here. You can also sign up for WCRC project updates here.
For questions about this project, contact Jane Allen, Project Manager, at (734) 327-6691 or [email protected].

Washtenaw County voters are being asked on the August 6, 2024, ballot to renew and restore the 0.5 mill four-year county-wide roads and non-motorized millage (Washtenaw County Proposal A). This is not a new tax for voters. If renewed and restored, the 0.5 mill is expected to generate approximately $10.9 million per year for roads and non-motorized pathway projects. WCRC would receive approximately $4.9 million per year for road work in 20 townships, Cities would receive approximately $3.8 million per year, with specific allocations based on the amount raised within cities borders, and WCPARC would receive approximately $2.2 million per year to support the expansion of the county non-motorized path network through the Border-to-Border Trail Project (B2B Trail) and the Connecting Communities Grant Program.
“Since its inception a decade ago, the county-wide roads and non-motorized millage has consistently delivered on its promise to improve the roadways, bridges, and non-motorized pathways in Washtenaw County,” said Matthew MacDonell, Managing Director of Washtenaw County Road Commission. “Through strategic investments and careful planning, we have witnessed significant progress in addressing the condition of our critical infrastructure.”
“The Roads and Non-motorized Millage is a testament to the power of collective action and community investment. As we look towards the future, we are confident that our continued partnership with WCRC, Township, and City leaders and residents will enable us to build upon past successes and pave the way for a brighter, more resilient tomorrow,” said Coy Vaughn, Director of Washtenaw County Parks & Recreation Commission.
More than 70% of county voters approved of the four-year, 0.5 mill roads and non-motorized millages in 2016 and 2020. With widespread support from our residents, the proposed Roads and Non-motorized Millage has consistently demonstrated its effectiveness in addressing the needs of our community.
“ The Roads and Non-motorized Millage have been a vital lifeline for our community, providing the necessary resources to improve our road infrastructure and non-motorized pathways, says Chuck Tellas, Supervisor for York Township. Our Township remains committed to working collaboratively with WCRC and WCPARC to ensure that our roads and non-motorized facilities remain safe, accessible, and well-maintained for the future.”

The intersection of Six Mile Road and Currie Road in Salem Township is now an all-way stop, also known as a four-way stop. The intersection was recently converted from a two-way stop with Six Mile Rd traffic having the right-of-way.

The Washtenaw County Road Commission (WCRC) is announcing plans to invest $6.7 million to improve approximately 20 lane miles of pavement throughout Washtenaw County during the 2024 construction season. Cadillac Asphalt was awarded the contract. The projects are funded through the 2021-2024 Four-year County-wide Roads and Non-Motorized Millage, federal funds and Michigan Transportation Funds (MTF).
“Most of these investments are made possible by Washtenaw County residents who travel on these roads every day. As stewards of these precious dollars, WCRC is committed to ensuring these resources are reinvested into communities, in which it came from,” said Mike Bernbeck, WCRC Project Manager.
Construction will begin mid-April and will end during the fall of 2024, weather pending. Listed below are the project locations with a link to their project web page, funding cost and traffic impacts:
Motorists will experience road closures with detours, lane restrictions, and flagging operations. WCRC will maintain access for residents who live or work within the project limits during construction.
WCRC will host a virtual public information meeting regarding the County-wide Resurfacing projects in Spring 2024. WCRC will post project updates online at wcroads.org. Residents can subscribe to road work advisories and project updates here.
