The Washtenaw County Road Commission (WCRC) Contractor is continuing to make progress on the Tyler Road project between McGregor Road and Airport Road in Ypsilanti Township.
Recently, the Contractor connected the storm sewer system into the bridge structure to promote efficient drainage during rain events. This two-day operation involved careful drilling and close monitoring of the structural integrity of the bridge.
Construction crews also prepared the nearby slope (previously washed out) for a new erosion control system. This system includes a durable cellular grid to promote slope stability during heavy rain events. The slope work began on Wednesday, April 23.
Next week, the Contractor plans to begin constructing the road base and installing storm drainage spillways at the east end of the project.

This week, WCRC’s contractor installed upgraded stormwater systems around the dam. WCRC also worked on upgrading drainage along Tyler Rd, North and East of the project site to divert flow away from the dam in the future.
Next week, the contractor will clean up the ditch left behind by the initial rain event and prepare the area for installation of a geocellular confinement system on the ridge adjacent to the dam.

This week, WCRC’s contractor focused on protecting the site from several rain events. The washout being repaired was caused by outdated stormwater collection systems, so the contractor reinforced the open excavations with additional ditching and other preventative measures. They also worked on removing abandoned utilities from the washout area.
The photo below shows laborers licensed in handling the removal of asbestos; a material commonly used during the initial construction of the dam. The pipe was safely and successfully removed. Additionally, WCRC’s contractor began installing upgraded stormwater systems with work to continue into the week of April 7.

This week, the contractor focused on demolition of the existing roadway, clearing the washout area, and removing the guardrail. They are also preparing to remove the abandoned utilities.
In the image below, the contractor is seen placing backfill, with compaction testing being conducted by a third-party firm. The objective is to establish a stable foundation for the removal of the abandoned utilities scheduled for early next week.
