Construction continues on Bemis Road between Stony Creek Road and Hitchingham Road in Augusta and Ypsilanti Townships. WCRC staff, in coordination with our contractor E.T. MacKenzie and a construction materials consultant, have been working to install an improved aggregate base. This revised base design was developed to address the poor soil conditions encountered and will support a new layer of hot mix asphalt (HMA) paving planned for September.
Major progress has been made at Hewen’s Drain, where the large box culvert has been installed and backfilled. All work at this location was completed under review by the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE), with materials and methods verified to meet required density standards.
While adjustments to the base design were underway, crews also made progress on other key elements of the project. This included installing storm sewer lines, drainage structures, driveway culverts, and curb and gutter.
Property owners should note that some driveway access restrictions are in place as concrete approaches are poured. These restrictions are necessary to allow for proper curing and strength testing. In most cases, driveways will remain closed for several days. Residents with emergency needs may inquire about early access beginning three days after their concrete is poured.
Bemis Rd between Stony Creek Rd and Hitchingham Rd will be closed for approximately 6 more weeks to accommodate the road reconstruction and weather permitting.
WCRC will continue to distribute notices as needed to keep residents informed. We appreciate your patience as we work to complete these important improvements.
