The Washtenaw County Road Commission (WCRC) held an in-person Public Meeting about the safety improvements at the intersection of Tuttle Hill Road and Merritt Road at the Ypsilanti Township Hall on Wednesday, October 8, 2025. WCRC has provided a link to the presentation on the project page. In collaboration with Ypsilanti Township, WCRC is moving forward with short-term safety improvements.
What to expect:
- WCRC has installed additional stop signs on Merritt Rd.
- WCRC has installed “Cross Traffic Does Not Stop” signage on Merritt Rd at Tuttle Hill Rd.
- WCRC ordered flashing LED borders for eastbound Merritt Rd approaching Tuttle Hill Rd. The device will be installed once it arrives.
- WCRC ordered the non-motorized pathway stop signs for all directions. The signs will be installed once they arrive.
- WCRC plans to install temporary rumble strips to draw motorist awareness as they approach the intersection. Be aware that rumble strips can cause noise concerns, therefore, WCRC will use temporary strips that are removable in case they are too disruptive to the community.
- WCRC intends to request the Homeowners Association (HOA) remove the vegetation (outside of the county road right-of-way) in the northwest portion of the intersection to improve sight lines.
Long term goals:
On Tuesday, October 21, 2025, the Washtenaw County Board of County Road Commissioners approved the resolution to request the Michigan State Police (MSP) to conduct an official speed study and consider applying the 50th percentile speed, given the crash history of the Tuttle Hill Rd and Merritt Rd intersection. Unfortunately, this process can take several months, if not years, to complete due to MSP’s limited resources for speed reviews.
WCRC is moving forward with the design of the proposed roundabout with raised crosswalks. Funding for the construction of the roundabout has not been identified.

WCRC appreciates residents’ patience as we work through implementing these safety measures. We will continue to update residents as the intersection improvements progress.
