The Washtenaw County Road Commission (WCRC) has received approval for federal Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP) funding to construct a single-lane roundabout at the intersection of Tuttle Hill Road and Merritt Road in Ypsilanti Township.
The federal funding commitment allows WCRC to proceed with an engineering solution designed to lower vehicle speeds and reduce severe crashes at the intersection.
This project follows short-term safety adjustments implemented by WCRC at the intersection last year. That work included installing delineators, flashing LED borders on stop signs, and additional signage to heighten driver awareness. The upcoming roundabout will replace those temporary measures with a long-term improvement.
“Securing competitive federal HSIP funds ensures we have the resources needed to address the safety concerns at this intersection,” said Michele Ford, WCRC Senior Project Manager. “A single-lane roundabout is an effective geometric design for this location, as it naturally lowers vehicle speeds and minimizes the conflict points that can lead to severe crashes.”
Project Details and Next Steps
- Timeline: The project is in the preliminary design phase. Federal funds are programmed for 2028.
- Public Meetings: WCRC will host a public information meeting during the design phase to present plans and gain community feedback.
