Project Announcement: Main St Bridge Replacement (Northfield Twp)

By June 11, 2024Project Updates

The Washtenaw County Road Commission (WCRC) is announcing plans to replace the bridge on Main Street over the Horseshoe Lake Outlet, between Jennings Rd and East Shore Drive in Northfield Township (Whitmore Lake).

The WCRC is in the first phase of the bridge replacement project, collecting field data to support design work. When the design work has been completed, the project will be advertised and bid, with construction forecasted to start in 2026. This schedule is based on funding availability, including the Local Bridge Program (Michigan Department of Transportation) and Michigan Transportation Funds (WCRC budget).

The Main Street Bridge was built in 1920 and has reached the end of its design life.

“Building bridges is not just about connecting two points; it is about ensuring safety, efficiency, and sustainability for generations to come,” says Nate Murphy, WCRC Senior Project Manager – Design and Construction.

Residents and motorists may notice WCRC surveyors collecting data near the bridge. This design phase work is not expected to impact traffic.

During the 2026 construction, the bridge will be closed to all traffic with a posted detour. The WCRC will host a virtual public information meeting regarding this project in 2025.

The WCRC will alert the public with construction updates on the WCRC website, Facebook, and Twitter pages. Sign up for WCRC project updates: wcroads.org/residents/subscribe-to-road-updates/
