May 4: New Commissioner & Walk. Bike. Drive. Safe.

Good morning,

It has been another wet and cold spring week, but we have almost made it through to a bright and sunny weekend. What a change in pace!

This week marks the start of the annual Walk. Bike. Drive. Safe campaign by SEMCOG, the Southeast Michigan Council of Governments. This campaign attempts to educate the public about the importance of safe behavior for all road users – pedestrians, bicyclists, and motorists a like. As a result of the recent pandemic, travel speeds have increased, causing more serious injuries and fatalities. Rather than relying solely on behavioral change, this campaign seeks safety through vehicle and road design, as well as operational changes. Check out their website for some great tips!

On another note, this week WCRC gained a new road commissioner, Jeff Smrz!  Commissioner Smrz has an extensive background in the construction industry, from residential building to transmission pipelines. He currently develops and leads classes at LIUNA Training of Michigan which is part of the laborers’ union. Commissioner Smrz resides in the District 3 area, so if you see him, please give him a warm WCRC welcome.

Additionally, in this week’s board meeting, our 2023 Q1 budget was approved and financing for the new Main Yard salt barn building was laid out. The board approved a number of township agreements and a few policy updates outlining safe driving practices when it comes to cellphone usage.

In short, it’s been a busy week, so I am sure you are all looking forward to the weekend as much as I am. Enjoy the beautiful weather!

Stay safe & take care,

Sheryl
