March 20: Social Distancing with Contractors and the Public

March 20, 2020, 3:21 p.m.

Dear WCRC Employees,

I’m so proud that we have been able to continue to provide our vital services to the public despite the uncertainty we have all faced over the past few weeks. I know you have been asked to work differently which can be challenging and uncomfortable at times. We have asked you to make these changes for your own safety.

Below is an email that we will be sharing with our contractors and the public asking them to interact differently with us too. If you ever get any push back from anyone for practicing safety measures like social distancing, please contact your supervisor immediately for assistance.

Communication to Construction Contractors

As you know, we have all been directed by federal, state, and county officials to limit face-to-face interactions as much as possible. This “social distancing” protocol is intended to stem the transmission of the coronavirus (COVID-19). The Washtenaw County Road Commission is promoting actions to reduce risk and concern for our staff and those with whom we work. This can be particularly challenging considering the inherent interaction associated with field assignments. Activities such as surveying, site inspection, and materials testing often involve relatively close contact amongst onsite employees.

WCRC has asked our field staff, including our consultant partners, to maintain a reasonable distance from onsite activities and others. We will continue to provide the required inspection, survey staking and materials testing. Our staff have been encouraged to perform their assigned work in a manner to reduce close contact with others, which may include them working from their vehicles whenever possible. For those contractor employees onsite or working within the right-of-way, they can certainly continue to approach WCRC staff to advance the work. However, considering the seriousness of the current situation, we are asking for the cooperation of the contractors working on our project sites and in the right-of-way. Your consideration in this regard is certainly appreciated.

Communication to the Public

We need your help! To help prevent the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19), we have asked our employees to work differently, including practicing social distancing while on the job.

We remain deeply committed to serving the public in a transparent and safe way. With this in mind, we ask that you don’t approach employees while they are working in the field.

Instead, if you have questions about the work you are seeing or any road concern, please contact us remotely:

If approached, our employees will also make this request of you.  This is for your safety and the safety of our employees.

Thank you!

Sheryl
