Good morning,
This week was a busy one for our operations crews as they began the 2023 Seal Coat program in Freedom & Lima Townships! The purpose of seal coat is to extend the life of our road system and protect our paved roads that are in good/fair condition from weather conditions and vehicle damage. However, due to impatient and neglectful drivers, this large operation can be quite a challenge for our crews who are out in the field. A big thank you to those who have been a part of this program. Whether you are operating equipment or directing traffic, your role in this operation is critical in keeping our crews and motorists on the road safe.
On another safety note, I would like to shine light on the Road Commission for Oakland County’s recent experience with irate motorists. Last week, an RCOC flagger was struck by a reckless and enraged driver. Police officials are still in search of this driver and thankfully the flagger is okay.
Even complete road closures can be dangerous. Due to the scope of work on Michigan Ave, we set up a total road closure. Despite this decision and even with numerous signs and message boards in place, motorists have moved barricades and attempted to drive through the active work zone. Due to these incidents, we have reevaluated the traffic control and sent out additional communications but ultimately, we do not have control over driver behavior. So even when you are working behind barricades and in total road closures, please continue to be vigilant and keep yourself safe.
Each of you plays an important role in keeping our work zones safe. From traffic control to communicating with residents, I want to thank you all for working to keep the public and members of our organization safe. Your efforts help ensure that WCRC employees return home to their families.
Finally, Happy Father’s Day to all our fathers! Being a parent is one of the hardest jobs out there so it’s our chance to celebrate you and thank you for the effort you put in each and every day. I hope you enjoy your special day.
Take care & stay safe
Sheryl
