July 22 – Q2 Budget Summary

Good morning,

It’s hard to believe but we are already more than halfway through the year. This week, at the Working Session, we did our quarterly budget review with the Board. Overall, the budget is in good shape and the projections are encouraging.

Revenue from the Michigan Transportation Fund, our biggest funding source, has rebounded to pre-pandemic numbers, which is fantastic news. We also have another robust local road program, thanks to our townships. Lastly, we recommended a few adjustments to the budget for some projects that have been delayed to 2022.

As you all know, as a road commission, our budget is pulled in a lot of different directions each year. We work hard to balance the needs of our employees, the road system and our fleet with these limited resources. I’m proud of the balance we can strike again this year – we are performing a large number of road and bridge projects, we are keeping up with equipment purchases and we are investing in our employees, in particular making extra payments towards our employee retirement obligations.

The Board will vote on these proposed adjustments at the August 3 meeting. A big thanks to Dan, Matt, Jim and their teams for all their work putting the budget update together.

Unfortunately, it looks like we have the potential for more storms coming our way this weekend. Hopefully, they do not cause too much damage, I know we have been doing a lot of storm clean-up lately.

I hope you have a relaxing weekend,

Sheryl
