February 25: Overcoming Adversity

Good morning,

How many of you were rooting for Matthew Stafford to win the Super Bowl? I was. Not because I’m a Lions fan, but because he faced adversity every single day for so many years and had very little to show for it. Yet, he continued his pursuit for greatness and finally was the last quarterback standing.

Our organization has and is continuing to deal with adversity, but we continue to persevere. That is a testament to all of you!  We’ve had our share of snowstorms, flooding, even a global pandemic, but we’ve worked together as a team and made it through. Currently, as we enter another “pothole season”, we are faced with a public that often have unrealistic expectations. Even though the gas tax revenues have increased in the last few years, there was 20 years that these funds didn’t even keep up with inflationary costs. We must now manage the public’s expectations and do the very best we can, with the resources that are available.

We need to continue to trust and rely on each other, to continue to provide the best service we can to those that drive on our roads. While it’s not winning the Super Bowl, it is an important service that we are providing each day and I am extremely proud to say I work at the Washtenaw County Road Commission!

I hope you have a wonderful weekend,

Dan
