July 17, 2019 Making More Progress but Road is Still Closed

Things are looking really good on the Zeeb Road Paving Project in Lodi Township. Our contractor finished the top course of asphalt earlier this week and is now working on the gravel shoulders and other punch list items. Line markings and permanent traffic signs will also be installed soon. We are aware that much of the grass seed has been washed away by recent heavy downpours, our contractor will circle back soon to clean-up and reseed the areas that need it.

As you can tell, we’re getting even closer to reopening the road but there are still some items that must be completed before that can happen. The road and intersections remain closed to through traffic. We are hoping to have the project completed and the road reopened within the next two weeks.

If you have questions about the project, please contact James Hui, project manager, (734) 327-6660, huij@wcroads.org.

July 10, 2019 We’re getting closer

Our contractor continues to make steady progress on the Zeeb Road project in Lodi Township. We’re planning to pave the final layer of asphalt on Friday and we will be working on driveway approaches early next week if the weather cooperates. Access in and out of your property will be provided during the paving process but there may be delays if they are working directly in front of your home or in your driveway.

We’re getting closer to reopening the road but there are still some items that must be completed before that can happen. The road and intersections remain closed to through traffic. We are hoping to have the project completed and the road reopened by mid-August, if not sooner.

If you have questions about the project, please contact James Hui, project manager, (734) 327-6660, huij@wcroads.org.

June 24, 2019 One layer down!

Last weekend was sure a beautiful one; it was perfect weather for many activities, including paving on Zeeb Road in Lodi Township. Thanks to the nice weather, our contractors were able to complete the first layer of asphalt. They now will focus on roadside drainage and culvert work over the coming weeks. The final layer of paving won’t be completed until the drainage work has been wrapped up.

Despite the first layer of asphalt being down, the road and intersections remain closed to through traffic. We are hoping to have the project completed and the road reopened by mid-August. As a reminder – the Washtenaw County Sheriff continues to assist us in enforcing the road closure. Please follow the posted detour or seek an alternate route.

If you have questions about the project, please contact James Hui, project manager, (734) 327-6660, huij@wcroads.org.

June 18, 2019 Getting Ready to Pave

We’re off to another great week on the Zeeb Road project in Lodi Township. Our contractor installed curb last week in preparation for paving. We are hoping to start paving the first layer of asphalt later this week (as long as it doesn’t rain). If you live or work within the project area, you will be provided access to your property but there may be some delays.

The road remains closed to all other traffic, including the intersections. We noticed a lot of cut-through traffic last week and have asked the Washtenaw County Sheriff to assist in enforcing the road closure. Please follow the posted detour or seek an alternate route.

If you have questions about the project, please contact James Hui, project manager, (734) 327-6660, huij@wcroads.org.

June 11, 2019 It’s Pulverizing Time

Our contractor continues to make steady progress on the Zeeb Road paving project in Lodi Township. Today, they are working on pulverizing the existing pavement between Waters Road and the entrance to Stone Co.

The road, including intersections, remains closed to through-traffic. Road users who live or own property within the work zone will be provided access to their homes or businesses during construction but there may be delays. We have seen a number of drivers speeding through the work zone which is extremely dangerous, posing a great risk to our road workers and drivers. Please use caution around all work zones and seek an alternate route.

If you have questions about the project, please contact James Hui, project manager, (734) 327-6660, huij@wcroads.org.

May 15, 2019 Let the Digging Begin!

With this week’s beautiful weather, our contractor is making great progress on the Zeeb Road paving project in Lodi Township. Our contractor is working on installing new culvert pipes near the intersection of Zeeb Rd and Ellsworth Rd. They are also busy grading the road and digging ditches.

The road, including intersections, remains closed to through-traffic between Ellsworth and  just north of Waters Road. Road users who live or own property within the work zone will be provided access to their homes or businesses during construction but there may be delays.

If you have questions about the project, please contact James Hui, project manager, (734) 327-6660, huij@wcroads.org.

September 5, 2018 Paving of Zeeb Road Has Been Delayed

Due to higher-than-expected bids, the paving of Zeeb Road in Lodi Township has been delayed until the 2019 construction season.

Last month, the Washtenaw County Road Commission (WCRC) received three bids from pre-qualified contractors for the paving of Zeeb Road in Lodi Township. The low bid received was $1,728,000, approximately 18% higher than had been expected.

Due to these higher-than-expected bids, the Board of Road Commissioners has decided to reject all bids. The project will be re-bid in the coming months, with the requirement that it be completed during the 2019 construction season. The board believes this delayed start time will allow contractors more flexibility and should result in more favorable bid prices.

The planned improvements remain the same:

  • Phase 1: Zeeb Road will be paved between Ellsworth Road and Waters Road. Tentatively, this phase will begin in the Spring of 2019 and be completed by the Fall of 2019.
  • Phase 2: Zeeb Road will be paved between Pleasant Lake Road and Ellsworth Road. This phase is scheduled to be constructed in 2020.

February 5, 2018 Zeeb Road Project Announcement

The Washtenaw County Road Commission (WCRC) is excited to announce an additional project tentatively planned during the 2018/2019 construction season on Zeeb Road in Lodi Township.

What will the improvement look like? WCRC is planning to pave Zeeb Road between Ellsworth Road and Waters Road in Lodi Township (Phase 1). The long range plan is to continue paving Zeeb Road south to Pleasant Lake Road in subsequent years (Phase 2).

Why now? In 2015, state lawmakers approved an increase in road funding that went into effect on January 1, 2017. In addition, the residents of Washtenaw County passed a four-year road millage in 2016.  This means county road commissions have additional funding to improve primary roads. Zeeb Road is one of a handful of unpaved primary roads remaining in the county and one of the most heavily used.

How long will the project take to build? It is estimated Phase 1 will take 3 months to pave, weather dependent. During this time, Zeeb Road will be closed to roadway users who do not live or own property in the project limits and a detour will be posted. The contractor will provide access to residents and property owners internal to the project limits during construction.

When will construction begin? Construction is tentatively expected to begin in late 2018 or early 2019. Preliminary work like tree removal and utility relocation will begin in February of 2018.

How can I get more information? WCRC will hold a public information meeting for interested stakeholders once preliminary plans are developed. WCRC will post construction updates online at www.wcroads.org and on its Facebook and Twitter pages. Interested residents can sign-up for weekly road work updates at https://www.wcroads.org/weekly-road-work-update/.
