February 27, 2026 Project Announcement: State Rd at Ellsworth Rd Roundabout Improvements (Pittsfield Twp)

The Washtenaw County Road Commission (WCRC), in partnership with the City of Ann Arbor, plans to make pedestrian and operational improvements to the roundabout at State Road and Ellsworth Road in 2027. This project is funded by a Southeast Michigan Council of Government (SEMCOG) Transportation Alternative Program (TAP) grant, WCRC Michigan Transportation Funds (MTF), and the City of Ann Arbor.

During construction, contractors will repave the State Road and Ellsworth Road roundabout, improve pavement markings and signage to help modify the flow of traffic for motorists, and upgrade pedestrian crossings.

“This project is vital to enhancing the safety and efficiency of this busy intersection,” said Elena Yadykina, WCRC Project Manager. “The improvements will greatly benefit the community by reducing traffic congestion and promoting safer travel.”

The intersection of State Road and Ellsworth Road has a rich history of development and growth. Originally a simple crossroads, it has evolved over the years to accommodate the increasing traffic demands of the area. In the 1980s, the intersection saw its first major upgrade with the introduction of traffic signals, and in the early 2000s, it was transformed into a modern roundabout to improve traffic flow. Unfortunately, there has been a pattern of crashes at the roundabout, so the WCRC has looked for ways to improve safety while serving the high volume of traffic. The proposed improvements will ensure the intersection continues to meet the needs of the community.

  • Public Meetings: The WCRC will host information meetings to share detailed plans and gather community feedback.
  • Construction Impact: When work begins in 2027, the intersection will require full closure to ensure the safety of both crews and the public. Detour routes will be established and communicated at that time. For more information visit the project web page here. Sign up for WCRC project updates here.
