The Good Roads Proposition

Roads are often an after-thought, they are taken for granted until they cause a problem – whether that be a pothole or a traffic crash that blocks your commute home.

But this hasn’t always been the case, more than 100 years ago, a group of concerned citizens rallied around a common cause – building good roads, they wanted to build a system that could support the growing county. After multiple failed attempts, a county road system and the Washtenaw County Road Commission (WCRC) was approved by voters in 1919. Ever since, the men and women of WCRC have been working hard to provide a safe road system for the traveling public.

In celebration of this golden anniversary, WCRC shared stories, photos and memories throughout 2019. The celebration culminated with an exhibit at the Washtenaw County Historical Society from November 2019 – February 2020.
