Latest Updates

August 4, 2022 Liberty Rd and Zeeb Rd Roundabout: Concrete Time!

There has been a lot of great progress at the Liberty Rd and Zeeb Rd Roundabout Project in Scio Township. Our contractor poured the concrete for the new curbs, which are now curing.

Tomorrow our contractor will begin pouring the concrete pavement which will take roughly two weeks to complete. Once complete, the concrete will need some time to cure.

The intersection remains closed to ALL through traffic. Access for those who live within the work zone will be provided from the north leg but NO traffic will be allowed to traverse the intersection itself. Law enforcement is issuing tickets to those who attempt to violate the closure. Motorists must follow the posted detour or take an alternate route.

Questions? Please contact James Hui, project manager, (734) 327-6660, huij@wcroads.org.

July 27, 2022 Liberty Rd and Zeeb Rd Roundabout: Concrete Coming Soon!

We are making great progress on the Liberty Rd and Zeeb Rd Roundabout Project in Scio Township. The storm sewer installation has been completed.

Our contractor is currently working on grading the road and placing material for the new road base. Once the new road base is placed, the work zone will be prepared for the new concrete curbs and road to be poured.

We have continued to see a lot of work zone intrusions. This is a major safety concern for construction crews and motorists alike. Law enforcement has been issuing tickets to those who attempt to violate the closure. Motorists must follow the posted detour or take an alternate route.

Questions? Please contact James Hui, project manager, (734) 327-6660, huij@wcroads.org.

July 12, 2022 Liberty Rd and Zeeb Rd Roundabout: Closed Means Closed

We are continuing to make good progress on the Liberty Rd and Zeeb Rd Roundabout Project in Scio Township. Our contractor finished removing the old pavement and is now working on installing storm sewers.

We have seen a lot of work zone intrusions in the first week of this closure. This is a major safety concern for construction crews and motorists alike. Law enforcement has been issuing tickets to those who attempt to violate the closure. Please follow the posted detour or take an alternate route.

Questions? Please contact James Hui, project manager, (734) 327-6660, huij@wcroads.org.

The countdown until the intersection closure begins! Roundabout construction is expected to begin at the intersection of Liberty Rd and Zeeb Rd in Scio Township on Tuesday, July 5. May 31, 2022 Liberty Rd and Zeeb Rd Roundabout: Construction Coming Soon!

We are getting closer to the start of roundabout construction at the intersection of Liberty Rd and Zeeb Rd in Scio Township. Our contractor is now planning to begin the intersection closure in early July.

As we continue to prepare for construction, we’ve had a few questions from residents regarding access during construction. Please see the information below for more information.

The intersection of Liberty Rd and Zeeb Rd will be CLOSED to ALL traffic during construction. Emergency services (police, fire, EMS) have been and will continue to be notified of this upcoming closure.

As local residents know, Liberty Rd, west of the intersection, has a tendency to flood at different times throughout the year, especially in the spring and fall. We are well aware of this issue and will monitor throughout construction. Thanks to a partnership with Scio Township, additional limestone was added to this section of Liberty Rd a few weeks ago to help mitigate this risk.

If Liberty Rd floods during roundabout construction, emergency access will be provided to impacted Liberty Rd residents and emergency responders through the Liberty/Zeeb intersection.

If significant rainfall is in the forecast, we will prepare the construction site one day in advance to make sure it is buttoned up enough to allow impacted Liberty Rd residents and emergency responders to traverse the construction site. If unpredicted rainfall occurs that causes Liberty Rd to flood, WCRC and our contractor have staff on-call 24/7. If you notice the road flooding overnight, please contact 911. The emergency dispatchers will call out to WCRC to dispatch/notify the necessary parties.

Depending on stage of construction underway at that time, we may need to use a variety of temporary tools/materials to ensure this access including temporary aggregate (stone). We will ensure that the necessary materials are readily available on site.

We will send project updates out via email to anyone who has subscribed to receive them, including if access changes are needed due to flooding. Click here to subscribe.

Thank you to everyone who was able to attend our virtual construction information meeting on May 5. Click here to watch the meeting recording.

June 16, 2021 Liberty Rd and Zeeb Rd Roundabout: Postponed until 2022

We have decided to postpone construction of the roundabout at the intersection of Liberty Rd and Zeeb Rd in Scio Township until 2022. We were planning to construct a single-lane roundabout later this summer but unfortunately, the construction bid prices came in high.

We believe we can get better pricing if we rebid the project with a 2022 construction year. In the meantime, area utility companies will continue to work on relocating their facilities that need to be moved ahead of roundabout construction.

We will send out another update early next year as we get closer to the start of construction.

If you have any questions about the project, please contact Elena Yadykina, project manager, yadykinae@wcroads.org, (734) 327-6675.

February 2, 2021 Project Announcement: Intersection of Zeeb Rd and Liberty Rd (Scio Twp)

The Washtenaw County Road Commission (WCRC) is pleased to announce it will build a roundabout at the intersection of Zeeb Road and Liberty Road in Scio Township during the 2021 Construction Season. screen shot of existing Zeeb/Liberty Intersection

What will the improvement look like?

WCRC is planning to build a single-lane roundabout at this intersection. This is the ideal solution because a roundabout can move traffic, including tractor trailers, through an intersection more efficiently and with less congestion than a traditional intersection at lower speeds. Roundabouts are also one of the safest options available and they are typically more cost-effective than a traditional traffic signal.

Why this intersection?

WCRC monitors numerous intersections across the county for traffic volumes and safety. The intersection of Zeeb Road and Liberty Road already had a higher traffic volume than what is recommended for the existing design. In addition, traffic volumes are expected to increase at this intersection once Zeeb Road between Pleasant Lake Road and Ellsworth Road is paved this summer.

A roundabout is the ideal solution to help safely handle current and future traffic volumes at this intersection.

When will this project be completed?

Roundabout construction is expected to begin in late-summer 2021. Some trees near the intersection need to be removed to accommodate proper drainage and modern road design. Due to environmental restrictions, this tree removal will take place before March 31, 2021.

WCRC estimates it will take 6 – 8 weeks to build the roundabout, weather pending. During this time, the intersection will be completely closed to traffic and a detour will be posted.

How can I get more information?

WCRC will hold a virtual public information meeting about this project on Monday, March 1, 2021, from 11 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. via Zoom. In addition, click here to visit WCRC’s project page to subscribe to project update emails.
