October 20, 2021 Mast Rd Bridge: The Last Sealant

We continue to put the final touches on the Mast Rd bridge in Webster Township, near the City of Dexter.

Last month, our contractor was able to seal the bridge deck. This week, they are applying a sealer to other concrete parts of the bridge. This remaining work requires multiple coats and very precise weather conditions in order to be applied. There will be minimal impact to traffic during this final stage of the project.

September 17, 2021 Lane Restrictions: Mast Rd Bridge (Webster Twp)

WHEN: Starting on Monday, September 20, 2021

WHERE: Mast Rd Bridge over the Huron River in Webster Township

WHY: Concrete sealant

BACKGROUND: Starting on Monday, September 20, 2021, the Washtenaw County Road Commission (WCRC) will apply a concrete sealant on the Mast Rd Bridge over the Huron River in Webster Township. This will be the last part of the Mast Rd Bridge Rehabilitation Project we have been working on throughout this summer.

The road will not be closed to traffic, but delays are likely due to lane closures. WCRC encourages motorists, emergency services and others to use an alternate route.

This process is expected to take approximately one week. However, all dates are tentative and subject to change due to weather conditions.

August 10, 2021 Mast Rd Bridge: Concrete Cures!

Steady progress is being made at the Mast Rd Bridge Project in Webster Township.

A few weeks ago temporary supports were placed on the bridge deck so our contractor can safely make the repairs to the northern pier. The repairs required us to remove damaged concrete from the pier and replace it with new concrete. Our contractor was able to finish pouring new concrete last week. The temporary supports will be removed once the concrete has cured.

Once the temporary supports are safely removed, we will finish the concrete repairs on the deck and install the remaining portion of the expansion joint.

July 22, 2021 Mast Rd Bridge: Round Two!

As promised, we are headed back to the Mast Rd Bridge Preservation Project in Webster Township at the beginning of next week. The necessary materials have been delivered for the second part of the project and our contractor is ready to go.

Monday morning, we plan to reinstate the temporary traffic signals to maintain two-way traffic on one lane over the bridge. Traffic will shift to the west side of the bridge while our contractors work on the east side of the bridge. They will be making repairs on the northern pier of the bridge and they will finish the sidewalk and curb work.

June 30, 2021 Mast Rd Bridge: Temporary Relief

The Mast Rd Bridge Project in Webster Township has made a lot of progress in the last few weeks. Our contractor has finished the concrete deck repairs and end-wall construction.

Good news! We have temporarily reopened two-way traffic over the bridge while our contractor waits for the delivery of the remaining materials. In about a month we will reinstate the lane closure over the bridge and will once again utilize temporary traffic signals to maintain two way traffic in the single lane.

Once materials have been delivered and the lane closure reinstated, our contractor will complete the repairs on the northern pier of the bridge as well as finish the sidewalk and curb work.

Questions? Contact Nate Murphy, project manager and bridge engineer, (734) 327-6647, murphyn@wcroads.org.

June 14, 2021 Mast Rd Bridge: Shift and Repair

Recently traffic was shifted to the west side of the Mast Rd Bridge Project in Webster Township. We are now making progress working on the east side of the bridge.

Currently the contractor is working on constructing new end-walls that will connect to the guardrails. We expect the concrete repairs on the bridge deck to be completed by the end of the month. Following the deck repairs, we will install temporary supports while we repair the northern pier of the bridge.

June 3, 2021 Mast Rd Bridge: Shift Coming!

This week, at the Mast Rd Bridge Project in Webster Township, our contractors have been finishing up work on the first stage of the project. This includes completing end-wall construction and installing guardrails on the west side of the bridge.

We are expecting to shift traffic to the west side of the bridge to continue deck repairs on the east side by the end of this week. Two-way traffic will continue to be maintained through a temporary traffic signal.

Similarly to old houses, it is not uncommon to uncover surprises once you start working on an old bridge as well. Unfortunately, that is the case on this bridge. We recently discovered that the northern pier of the bridge needs some additional repairs where the beams are supported, which means our project and lane closures will be extended until late August.

Questions? Contact Nate Murphy, project manager and bridge engineer, (734) 327-6647, murphyn@wcroads.org.

May 25, 2021 Mast Rd Bridge: End-wall, Be All

Progress is continuing at the Mast Rd Bridge Project. This week our contractors have continued concrete patching on the bridge deck, and poured concrete for the first portion of the expansion joints.

In addition, our contractors have began building the new end-walls for the bridge, which will provide a better attachment for the guardrails. This includes rebar installation and then pouring concrete.

Once the current end-walls are completed, traffic will be shifted to the west side of the bridge for the next stage of the project. This could happen as early as next week.

Questions? Contact Nate Murphy, project manager and bridge engineer, (734) 327-6647, murphyn@wcroads.org.

May 17, 2021 Mast Rd Bridge Preservation: Out With The Old, In With The New

The Mast Rd Bridge Preservation Project continues on the border of Webster Township and the City of Dexter. Lane restrictions will continue as our project is underway, with temporary traffic signals and pavement markings to assist drivers.

The expansion joints have been replaced, which allow the bridge to accommodate for external forces like temperature or heavy loads. The fractured concrete on the deck and pier is being removed, and the contractor plans to pour in new concrete patches within a week.

Questions? Contact Nate Murphy, project manager and bridge engineer, (734) 327-6647, murphyn@wcroads.org.

May 4, 2021 Mast Rd Bridge: Lane Closure in Place

The Mast Rd Bridge maintenance project is officially underway on the border of Webster Township and the City of Dexter. We installed the temporary lane closure on the bridge yesterday morning. Temporary traffic signals are now managing traffic on both sides of the bridge. We also placed new temporary pavement markings to help motorists understand the change, including near the railroad tracks.

Please use extra caution in this area as everyone adjusts to this new traffic pattern. We plan to complete our planned maintenance work by the end of July.
