July 22, 2020 Carpenter Rd: Finishing Touches

We are still wrapping up a few items on our Carpenter Road resurfacing project in Pittsfield Township, including:

  • Wireless traffic detectors aka “pucks” at the signalized intersections – this work will be completed over the next few weeks and should only take a few hours per location
  • Plantings – at the rain garden near the Home Depot will be completed later this fall

We really appreciate your patience during this project, we are nearly done! If you have questions about the project, please contact Aaron Berkholz, senior project manager, berkholza@wcroads.org, (734) 327-6648.

July 9, 2020 Carpenter Rd: Lanes Reopened

Earlier today, our contractor reopened the outside curb lanes on Carpenter Road between Ellsworth and Packard Road in Pittsfield Township. There will be limited lane restrictions in specific areas over the next week as we finish up some work, including the rain garden near Home Depot.

Please continue to use caution around the work zone.

If you have questions about the project, please contact Aaron Berkholz, senior project manager, berkholza@wcroads.org, (734) 327-6648.

June 30, 2020 Carpenter Rd: Paving Complete!

We continue to make steady progress on our road resurfacing project on Carpenter Road in Pittsfield Township. Last week, our contractor finished paving the center lanes between Ellsworth Road and Packard Road.

We still have a few items to finish including adjusting storm sewer structures, traffic signal work, permanent pavement markings and putting the final touches on the rain garden near the Home Depot. Lane restrictions will remain in place until these items have been completed.

We are hoping to have all this work wrapped up by mid-July if the weather continues to cooperate.

If you have questions about the project, please contact Aaron Berkholz, senior project manager, berkholza@wcroads.org, (734) 327-6648.

June 18, 2020 Carpenter Rd: Traffic Shift Coming Soon

Thanks to a great weather window, our contractor has completed paving the curbside (outside) lanes on Carpenter Road in Pittsfield Township. They have also finished paving the intersections of Carpenter/Ellsworth, Carpenter/Center Valley and the southern leg of Carpenter/Packard.

In the next few days, we will shift northbound and southbound traffic to the freshly paved curbside lanes and close the center lanes to all traffic. While these center lanes are closed, left turns from the curbside lanes will not be allowed at individual driveways but will be allowed at the signalized intersections.

Once traffic has been shifted, our contractor will mill and pave the center lanes. We expect milling to begin next week, weather pending.

If you have questions about the project, please contact Aaron Berkholz, senior project manager, berkholza@wcroads.org, (734) 327-6648.

June 9, 2020 Carpenter Rd: Let’s Get Paving!

Paving is expected to start this week on Carpenter Road in Pittsfield Township. Our contractor is planning to start milling tomorrow in the intersections and closed curb lanes. We are then hoping to start paving on Thursday. This first round of milling/paving should take 4 – 5 days, depending on the weather.

While this is great news for the project schedule, it will mean more traffic delays for motorists, especially while we are milling/paving the intersections of  Carpenter/Ellsworth, Carpenter/Center Valley and the southern leg of Carpenter/Packard. We will maintain traffic flow with flaggers but major congestion is expected during the milling/paving process.

Once we finish paving the outside curb lanes, we will shift northbound and southbound traffic to the newly paved lanes and close the inside lanes for milling/paving. While these inside lanes are closed, left turns from the outside lanes will not be allowed at individual driveways but will be allowed at the intersections. We know this will be a major inconvenience but it is for the safety of all motorists during construction.

If you have questions about the project, please contact Aaron Berkholz, senior project manager, berkholza@wcroads.org, (734) 327-6648.

June 4, 2020 Carpenter Rd: Paving Coming Soon

Our contractor continues to make good progress on the Carpenter Road resurfacing project in Pittsfield Township. The outside curb lanes remain closed to accommodate ongoing construction work, including pedestrian signal improvements, concrete curb and concrete sidewalk construction.

We hope to begin milling and paving the outside curb lanes in the next 1 – 2 weeks, weather permitting. After we have finished paving the outside curb lanes, northbound and southbound traffic will be shifted to these newly paved lanes. Work will then begin on the interior lanes.

To help prevent the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19), our employees and contractors are instructed to practice social distancing while on the job site. If you have questions about the project, please do not approach staff in the field. Instead, contact Aaron Berkholz, senior project manager, berkholza@wcroads.org, (734) 327-6648.

P.S. Based on what we are hearing from DTE, Pittsfield Township’s street lighting project along Carpenter Road is expected to start soon. This work is being performed under a separate contract. We are coordinating with DTE in hopes of accommodating this street lighting work during the ongoing road improvements. However, the projects are moving forward on independent schedules. Some street lighting work is likely to occur after the road improvements have been completed.

May 21, 2020 Carpenter Rd: Progress Through the Rain

Despite the rainy weather this week, our contractor is making progress on the Carpenter Road resurfacing project in Pittsfield Township. They will continue the concrete curb and sidewalk pours in the coming days as the weather allows. We are also making steady progress on the traffic signal work related to pedestrian signal upgrades and we have started the early stages of rain garden construction in front of the Home Depot.

We very much appreciate the patience of adjacent businesses during the removal and replacement of curb segments, resulting in the temporary closure of various driveways. The identified curb segments were in poor condition. The new curb will improve drainage and contribute to the longevity of the adjacent road surface.

We have also been working to adjust traffic signal timing to promote better traffic flow through the work zone. However, due to the reduced capacity associated with the lane closures, some motorist delays do exist during peak hours.

May 4, 2020 Carpenter Rd: Lane Restrictions Began this Morning

As of this morning, we have officially started our project on Carpenter Road in Pittsfield Township. Lane restrictions were put in place earlier today between Ellsworth Road and Packard Road. We will be doing prep work over the next few days and then we will begin structure removals.

Access to businesses and driveways within the work zone will be maintained throughout construction but motorists are advised to seek an alternate route if possible.

To help prevent the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19), our employees and contractors are instructed to practice social distancing while on the job site. March 13, 2020 Carpenter Rd: Construction to Begin this Spring

We will soon begin the road resurfacing project on Carpenter Road in Pittsfield Township. Starting in late-April, our contractor will begin work on Carpenter Road between Ellsworth Road and Packard Road. An exact start date will be determined as we get closer and a road advisory will be posted to www.wcroads.org.

Carpenter Road will remain open to traffic during this entire project but there will be lane closures and delays. We hope to host a construction information meeting sometime in April to provide more details. For specific questions about this project, contact Aaron Berkholz, berkholza@wcroads.org, (734) 327-6648.

September 11, 2019 Carpenter Road Project Plan

The Carpenter Road resurfacing project, originally planned for 2019, will not begin in earnest until the spring of 2020. This schedule change is due to contractor availability and the road project bidding process.

This fall, our contractor will conduct some traffic signal work in preparation for the improvements coming next year. Area utilities will also be relocated during the fall and winter. Carpenter Road between Ellsworth Road and Packard Road will remain open during this work but there may be intermittent lane restrictions.

In the spring, our contractor, Cadillac Paving, will begin the road resurfacing project. Carpenter Road between Ellsworth Road and Packard Road will be milled and then a new layer of asphalt will be placed. Our contractor will also repair some damaged curb and storm sewer before the road work has been completed. In partnership with the Washtenaw County Water Resource Commissioner’s Office, our contractor will also construct a rain garden in the road right-of-way near Home Depot to help with storm water management. In addition, Pittsfield Charter Township has partnered with DTE Energy to install street lighting along the corridor.  We are working with all agencies to coordinate construction whenever possible.

Carpenter Road between Ellsworth Road and Packard Road will remain open to traffic during this entire project but there will be lane closures and delays, especially in the spring/summer 2020. We will host a public information meeting early next year to provide more information.
