October 10, 2018 Nearly There!

It has been a long summer of construction on Harris Road in Ypsilanti Township but we are almost done!

The top layer of paving was completed yesterday on Harris Road and our contractor is now working to complete a punch list of items, including the pavement markings. Once this work has been completed, the road will be reopened to all traffic. We’re hoping to have the road officially open by the end of next week.

Thank you so much for your patience throughout this project.

If you have questions, please contact Matt MacDonell, director of engineering, (734) 327-6688 or macdonellm@wcroads.org.

September 27, 2018 Work Resumes on Harris Road

The labor dispute that has halted work on Harris Road for the past three weeks has come to a temporary resolution. Paving on Harris Road between Michigan Avenue and Holmes Road is scheduled to resume sometime in the next week. Once paving has been completed, the road will be reopened to all traffic.

To read more about the dispute, visit: mlive.com/news/labor_dispute

Thank you for your patience during this unusual time. If you have questions, please contact Matt MacDonell, project manager, (734)327-6688 or macdonellm@wcroads.org.

September 4, 2018 Work Stoppage Impacts Harris Road Project

As of 7 a.m. this morning, many projects on county roads in Washtenaw County are on hold due to a labor dispute between the Michigan Infrastructure Transportation Association (MITA) and the Operating Engineer’s Local 324. The Washtenaw County Road Commission (WCRC) is not a party to these negotiations.

This work stoppage halts all paving, and some earthwork and underground work done by contractors on county roads. On the Harris Road project, our contractor will continue with some work but will be unable to lay the final layer of asphalt until this labor dispute has ended.

Please contact Matt MacDonell, project manager, if you have any questions – macdonellm@wcroads.org or (734) 327-6688.

August 23, 2018 It’s Paving Time!

We are getting closer to the finish line on this project, check out the drone photo below to see all the progress we have made over the past month.

On Monday, August 27, 2018, our contractor will begin asphalt paving on Harris Road between Michigan Avenue and Holmes Road. We will be placing three layers of asphalt, the first two layers, also known as the “base” and “leveling course” will be placed next week.

After those layers have been placed, we have some additional non-asphalt work to complete before we can come in with the final, “top course” of asphalt. We will send out another email update before we apply this last layer.Once we have completed the last layer of asphalt, our contractor will then install pavement markings, completing our road work.

During paving, residents and property owners, who live or work internal to the project limits, will be provided access to their home or business but drivers should expect delays. We expect all work to be completed by mid-September. However, as with all construction, exact dates are tentative and subject to change due to weather conditions.

If you have any questions, please contact Matt MacDonell, project manager at macdonellm@wcroads.org or (734) 327- 6688 with any questions.

Thank you again for your patience!

July 19, 2018 Harris Road Concrete Work is Shifting North

Starting Monday, July 23 (if the weather cooperates), Bailey Excavating, our Harris Road project contractor, will be working on concrete curb and gutter on Harris Rd between Forest Ave and Holmes Rd. As a reminder, you will not be able to drive where they are pouring concrete or on freshly poured concrete (for up to 3 days). If your driveway is blocked, you will be allowed to park temporarily on the street until the concrete has cured.

Bailey Excavating will be back in a few weeks to pour concrete sidewalks and driveway approaches in this area. We will send out another update before that work begins.

In addition, DTE and its contractor will begin work on the underground facilities required for street lighting. They will start between Michigan Ave and Forest Ave and then move north as the concrete curb is completed.

If you have any questions, please contact Matt MacDonell, project manager at macdonellm@wcroads.org with any questions.

Thanks again for your patience and have a wonderful weekend.

July 12, 2018 The Harris Rd Reconstruction Project Rolls Onward!

It’s already been a busy July on Harris Road; we’ve completed all the underground utility work and Bailey Excavating, our project contractor, will continue to work on concrete sidewalks, gutters, curbs, and driveways, while also preparing the road for paving.

We are on track to have the road reopened to traffic sometime in mid to late August. If you have any questions, please contact Matt MacDonell, project manager at macdonellm@wcroads.org with any questions.

Thanks again for your patience!

June 25, 2018 It’s Concrete Time!

This morning, Bailey Excavating, our Harris Road project contractor, started pouring concrete sidewalk on the south end of the project. They will continue to pour concrete for sidewalks, curb and gutter and driveways over the next few weeks.

There will be times during this process when you won’t be able to use your driveway. You will not be able to drive where they are pouring concrete or on freshly poured concrete (for up to 3 days). Concrete is a great material but it needs to “cure” or cool down and harden once it has been poured. The curing process usually takes 3 days for this type of work.

If you cannot access your driveway, our contractor, Bailey Excavating, will provide you with an alternative location to park your vehicles.

We know this will be inconvenient and we appreciate your patience.

If you have any questions, please contact Matt MacDonell, project manager at macdonellm@wcroads.org with any questions.

June 11, 2018 Harris Road Project Update

This week, as the storm sewer work continues, we will mill away the pavement of the Harris Road and start the earthwork required to build the road base. These are the first steps in the pavement reconstruction process. People who live within the work zone will still have access to their residence but there may be delays as the crews are working.

We are still on track to have the road back open to traffic at the end of July as long as the weather cooperates. We appreciate everyone’s continued patience during this project.

May 8, 2018 Water Main has been Installed!

Bailey Excavating, the Harris Road project contractor, has installed the water main between Michigan Avenue and Forest Avenue. The next step is to connect the existing water system to the new main. They will begin this work today and it will take them until at least next week to complete.

If your water service will be impacted, you will be contacted by a representative from OHM Advisors, the Ypsilanti Community Utilities Authority (YUCA) or Bailey Excavating in advance of your water service being connected to the new system.

Residents can expect a brief water outage during this changeover and they will be notified in advance of when this outage will take place.

Thanks for your patience!

April 25, 2018 Harris Road Mailboxes Have Been Relocated

The mailboxes within the project limits have been temporarily relocated by the contractor.  Two locations have been set up outside the work area at the intersections of Oak St & Harris Rd and Forrest Ave & Harris Rd.

Near the completion of the project, the contractor will reinstall each mailbox with a new post as close to it’s previous location as possible.
