Main Street Bridge Feasibility Study Final
Background
The Washtenaw County Road Commission worked with JJR, Inc. of Ann Arbor, Michigan to conduct a feasibility study of possible transportation improvements to the area surrounding the Main Street Bridge over the Mill Creek in Scio Township. This study was necessary due to a lowering of the weight restriction on the Main Street Bridge, traffic growth to the north and west of the Village of Dexter, the one-lane rail underpass, the Dexter-Pinckney/Island Lake intersection, and an increase of inner-village traffic congestion.
The study was completed in two phases. The first phase identified options for replacing the Main Street Bridge, which has deteriorated over the years and is currently posted at a 7-ton weight limit. Options to replace the bridge are closely linked to regional transportation issues associated with traffic congestion in and around the Village of Dexter. The study compared previously identified solutions such as upgrading the existing roads, the extension of Parker Road from Dexter-Chelsea Road to Dexter-Pinckney Road, the expansion of the on-lane rail under pass on Dexter-Ann Arbor Road, along with other improvements in the context of decreasing congestion in the Village and accommodating regional growth.
