Background Information

Bemis Road is a gravel, county local road straddling the border of Augusta Township and Ypsilanti Township. Due to development of a school campus and several residential subdivisions in the area, interest has developed in having the road paved between Whittaker Road and Hitchingham Road.

The Washtenaw County Road Commission envisions a two-lane paved road with widening for a center-left-turn lane at Whittaker Road. The Board is supportive of initiating the design and construction of the Bemis Road project when funding is secured.

The Bemis Road paving project was originally intended to be a cooperative effort between the Washtenaw County Road Commission, Lincoln Consolidated Schools, and Phoenix Acquisitions, LLC, the developer of River Park Condominium.

However, due to a lack of firm commitment from the developer at this time, the Road Commission cannot complete the paving of Bemis Road. If other local funding to pave Bemis Road cannot be identified in the near term through a SAD, the Road Commission staff will continue to pursue this project if/when developers apply for permits and seek plan approvals from the Road Commission.
