Austin Road Bridge

General Information

General Information:  The Austin Road Bridge over the Saline River is located between Grass Road and Schill Road, in Section 4 of Saline Township.  The original bridge was built in 1939.  The single span steel beam structure has a total length of 45ft and a width of 39ft.  The current weight restriction for the Austin Rd Bridge is 17 Tons.

The design of the proposed bridge has not been determined at this time.  The replacement of the existing bridge is expected to occur during the summer of 2014.

Background:  In late 2011, the Washtenaw County Road Commission (WCRC) was awarded a grant through the Local Bridge Program (LBP), which is administered by the Michigan Department of Transportation  (MDOT).  The final plans, specifications, and estimate are expected to be approved by the Washtenaw County Board of Road Commissioners in late 2013.  Construction is expected to occur during the summer of 2014.

The funding percentage for participating road approach and bridge construction items is ninety-five percent (95%).  The remaining five percent (5%) will be assumed by the Road Commission.  The estimated cost for construction will be determined in early 2014 after all construction bids are received.  The project will be included in the WCRC 2013 & 2014 budgets.

Project Updates:  In November 2011, the WCRC received funding from the Local Bridge Program for the replacement of the Austin Rd Bridge, to be used during the 2014 fiscal year.
