Public Information Meeting- Scio Church Rd at Wagner Rd Compact Urban Roundabout

By March 23, 2016Meeting Notices

The Washtenaw County Road Commission, with its contractor, will build a compact urbanroundabout at the intersection of Scio Church Road and Wagner Road in 2017 to reduce peakperiod congestion that occurs at the intersection.
The Road Commission will host a public information meeting on Wednesday, March 23, 2016, from 5:30 pm- 7:30 pm. At the meeting, residents, business owners, andcommuters will learn available details about the project, including proposed detourroutes, residents’ access to their property during construction, and projected timelines.
A compact roundabout was chosenover a larger, traditional roundabout or a traffic signal for the followingreasons: (1) Acompact urban roundabout has a smaller footprint. This is important because it requiresless right-of-way, which means there are fewer impacts to property owners andresources are saved that can be used on other county infrastructure needs; (2)Roundabouts are statistically safer than traffic signals. A trade-off occurs between highspeed, t-bone collisions that occur when a driver ‘beats’ a red light for low speed, andsideswipe collisions; (3) With a traffic signal, delay is always present 24 hours a daywhen a driver encounters a red light. At a roundabout, less delay occurs, especially atoff-peak hours, due to the yield condition. This aspect is also a benefit to theenvironment since fewer vehicle emissions are placed into the air; (4) A compact urbanroundabout will be less intrusive to Scio Township’s historic barn and adjacent cornerproperties.
A CMAQ (Congestion, Mitigation, Air Quality) grant was secured to build the proposedcompact urban roundabout to address delays during peak hours of the day. This projectwill occur in the summer of 2017.
