During their first meeting of 2008 held on January 3, the Washtenaw County Board of Road Commissioners elected Fred J. Veigel as its 2008 Chair of the Board, taking over for Wesley Prater who was the 2007 Chairman. The other two members of the three-member Board are David E. Rutledge, elected as the 2008 Vice-Chair, and Prater, member.
The
Washtenaw County Road Commission is governed by a three-member
Board of Road Commissioners, appointed by the Washtenaw County
Board of Commissioners. To formulate policy and provide oversight,
each Board member is appointed to a six-year staggered term; that
is, one Commissioner is appointed every two years.
Fred Veigel has served on the Washtenaw County Board of Road Commissioners since he was first appointed by the County Board of Commissioners in December of 1990 and officially assumed his Road Commissioner position in January 1991. Commissioner Veigel’s current term will expire effective December 31, 2008, unless he is reappointed by the County Board at the end of this year.
In addition to being a member on the Road Commission Board, Veigel has previously held the positions of both Chair and Vice-Chair of the WCRC Board throughout his term of appointment. A graduate from Ann Arbor Pioneer High School, Veigel has been a long time resident of Washtenaw County and Ypsilanti. He graduated from Local 252 IBEW with a 4-year electrical apprenticeship in 1958, is a U.S. Army veteran, and has held a multitude of prominent public service positions in the County that span over 40 years.
Over the years, Veigel has gained a strong background and leadership in labor relations, and union negotiations/management, serving for the Huron Valley Central Labor Council AFLCIO, as well as in many capacities for the IBEW Local 252. Commissioner Veigel has been president of the Huron Valley Central Labor Council AFLCIO since 1969, a member since 1964, and has also held the positions of secretary, treasurer and vice-president on this duo-county council. Additionally, Veigel is a member of both the National and Michigan State AFL-CIO General Boards, and is a member of the National AFL-CIO Speakers Bureau. He has served as the Road Commission’s representative on the Washtenaw County Parks & Recreation Commission since 2000, for which he was just reappointed. Additionally, Veigel has served on numerous committees and boards, some of which include the Michigan United Way, the Washtenaw County CETA, the Ypsilanti City Compensation Committee, the University of Michigan Board of Directors for Replacement Hospital, and the Ypsilanti Township Construction Board of Appeals, to name just a few.
Continuing their current terms on the Road Commission Board are Rutledge, who has served as a Road Commissioner since January 2005, and Prater, who was appointed to serve his six-year term in January 2007.
In addition to the election of 2008 officers, the Board of County Road Commissioners adopted their Annual Board Meeting Schedule.
