Background
The Washtenaw County Road Commission has REOPENED the East Delhi Road Bridge over the Huron River to vehicular traffic. The installation of the approach guardrail was completed late in the afternoon on Thursday, August 27, 2009. The bridge was opened shortly thereafter.
The rehabilitated bridge carries a weight limit of 20 TONS.
Work completed over the past year included the temporary relocation of the truss bridge to the northerly shoreline, removal and reconstruction of the bridge foundations, structural steel upgrades and cleaning/painting of the truss bridge, reconstruction of the road approaches, placement of the truss bridge onto the new bridge abutments, installation of a new timber deck and bridge railing, traffic signal installation, asphalt paving of the road approaches and bridge deck, and restoration of the site.
The Washtenaw County Road Commission and Citizens for the East Delhi Bridge Conservancy have scheduled a bridge rededication ceremony and celebration. The event will be held on Sunday, September 13, 2009 beginning at 5:00 p.m. at the Delhi Metropark.
The cooperation and patience shown by area residents and motorists during the closure and rehabilitation of this historic truss bridge has been greatly appreciated.
