Posted on June 18, 2008

What: The Harris Road Bridge over the Fowler Creek - RESCHEDULED

When: Beginning Thursday, June 19, 2008 through Wednesday, July 2, 2008

Where: On Harris Road, between Vreeland Road and Cherry Hill Road in Superior Township

Why: Replacement of short-span bridge due to failed condition with a new concrete box culvert

Background

Due to a delay in the delivery of the new concrete box culvert, the Road Commission has RESCHEDULED THE START OF WORK AND COMPLETION DATE FOR THE HARRIS ROAD BRIDGE REPLACEMENT. Beginning on Thursday, June 19, 2008, the Operations Heavy Equipment Crew from the Washtenaw County Road Commission will begin work to replace the Harris Road Bridge over the Fowler Creek, located between Vreeland Road and Cherry Hill Road in Superior Township. The current short-span bridge will be replaced with a 16’ wide by 6’ high by 42’ long concrete box culvert.

It is anticipated that the work will be completed by the end of the day on Wednesday, July 2, 2008, weather dependent, and that Harris Road will be REOPENED to traffic immediately thereafter.

On July 3, 2007, the Washtenaw County Road Commission CLOSED the Harris Road Bridge over Fowler Creek upon the completion of a routine inspection. The inspection revealed severe deterioration and structural failure of an abutment. The bridge inspector recommended that the Road Commission impose an immediate closure of the structure for the safety of the motoring public. This short-span bridge was one of seven short-span bridges and culverts in Washtenaw County that the Road Commission was forced to close in 2007, following routine, biennial inspections.

The Road Commission thanks you in advance for your patience as these necessary improvements to the county road system are completed.
