What: Road Reconstruction / Closure
When: Ongoing
Where: Holmes Road, from Rue Deauville to Spencer Lane in Ypsilanti Township
Why: Holmes Road, Phase 2 Project – CLOSURE / DETOUR ROUTE
Background
On Wednesday, April 9, 2008, the Washtenaw County Road Commission (WCRC) initiated construction operations on the Holmes Road, Phase 2 project in Ypsilanti Township. This included the CLOSURE of Holmes Road between Rue Deauville and Ford Boulevard to through traffic.
Since that date, topsoil stripping, tree removals, and sign removals have progressed. Local traffic within the closure limits is being maintained. Local traffic includes emergency services, school transportation, garbage-recycling pickup, postal delivery, and motorists traveling to and from residential and business addresses within the closure limits.
In the near future, the WCRC will be lengthening the road CLOSURE to include Holmes Road, between Ford Boulevard and Spencer Lane. As noted above, local traffic within the closure limits will be maintained.
The posted DETOUR in place during this road closure will direct motorists along Prospect Road, Clark Road, and Ridge Road. Ford Boulevard will remain open to traffic during the project. The closure will remain in place for the duration of the project. The project is currently scheduled for completion in November 2008.
The scope of work for this project includes the reconstruction of Holmes Road, including storm sewer, new concrete curb and gutter, and asphalt pavement. The new roadway will remain a two-lane road with 4-foot bicycle lanes on both sides. At the intersection of Holmes and Midway, additional turn lanes will be constructed (on Holmes) and a traffic signal will be installed to improve the operation of the intersection. New sidewalks will be constructed along both sides of the roadway as part of this project.
Water main improvements along Holmes Road are scheduled to begin the week of April 21, 2008. The Ypsilanti Community Utilities Authority (YCUA) will be overseeing this aspect of the work. Residents will be notified by the contractor 24 hours in advance of water service being disrupted.
To maintain the safety of road crews, local traffic within the closure limits should use extra care and be mindful of the equipment, trucks, and construction personnel on the site. The WCRC has notified the Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Department of this road work and related road closure. The Road Commission thanks you in advance for your patience as these necessary improvements to the county road system are completed.
