What: Bridge Replacement / Dam Removal Project - FIRST STAGE

When: Beginning Wednesday, April 16, 2008

Where: (Dexter) Main Street Bridge over Mill Creek / Mill Creek Dam, in Scio Township and the Village of Dexter

Why: Impending Construction, Traffic Shift, Park Drive Closure

Background

Beginning on Wednesday, April 16, 2008, the Washtenaw County Road Commission (WCRC) will begin construction activities associated with the replacement of the (Dexter) Main Street Bridge over Mill Creek, and the removal of the Mill Creek Dam in Scio Township and the Village of Dexter. The new (Dexter) Main Street Bridge will be constructed part-width, thereby allowing the maintenance of two-way traffic during the project.

This FIRST STAGE of the overall project will involve the SHIFTING OF TRAFFIC to the northerly portion of the existing bridge. The activities associated with this traffic shift will include the positioning of temporary construction signage, construction drums, barricades, and temporary concrete barrier wall sections. Flagging operations will be in place to accomplish this work. The intermittent stopping of traffic will be necessary and traffic delays are likely. Motorists are asked to remain patient during these delays.

This stage of the project will be in place for approximately four (4) weeks. This traffic shift will allow the temporary widening of the southerly portion of the existing bridge. This temporary widening is needed to move into the next stage of the project.

In addition to the above noted traffic shift, the access drive to Warrior Creek Park, in the northeast quadrant of the bridge, will be closed. This drive closure will remain in place for the duration of the project. This action will both assure the safety of the public and provide a staging area for the contractor to conduct construction operations.

To maintain the safety of road crews, please reduce speeds and drive cautiously through the work zone. The posted speed limit within the project limits will be reduced to 25 mph. In addition, we have requested the assistance of the Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Department in assuring the safety of the road crews and the motorists through increased enforcement activity during construction. The Road Commission thanks you in advance for your patience as we undertake this vital improvement for the county road system and the Village of Dexter.
